At Eastern Refuge we are lucky enough to have a Child Advocate, whose role it is to specifically advocate on behalf of children.
As part of her advocacy role she supervises our playgroup activities and has developed age appropriate programmes, activities and play where our children can feel safe in exploring the refuge environment.
As part of our education and programme commitment, our Child Advocate often works one to one with mothers to assist them in achieving their parenting goals and to assist with, sometimes challenging behaviors from children who have often experienced some form of trauma.
This programme is targeted and specific to the needs of individual families and where possible and with the consent of the family, will include the linking of the family with another child appropriate agency also.
Eastern Refuge has relationships with specific Ministry of Justice providers who deliver programmes to children, either within the Refuge setting, or within their own organisations. We are able to make direct referrals for children who are named on a Protection Order to these free programmes. We believe this assists in their healing and development and recommend talking to our staff about these options.
